State-led requirements
Boating in the United States as a visitor
There is no single US recreational boating licence. The state decides who needs boater education, which out-of-state evidence it accepts and which exemptions apply.
Keep two questions separate
Am I legally allowed to operate?
Check the selected state’s boater-education rule, age thresholds, vessel or motor scope, visitor exemptions and reciprocity.
Will the owner let me charter?
An RYA, ASA, US Sailing or ICC document may help demonstrate practical competence, but the charter operator can ask for more than state law.
Where an RYA certificate fits
Keep it as evidence of sailing training and experience. Do not assume it replaces a state boater-education card: state reciprocity usually focuses on approved boater-education evidence, and the rules vary.
